SE: The most difficult part of the whole project was navigating the availability of furniture and fabrics due to the pandemic. The whole remodel took place in the thick of Covid, so it changed the way we decorated. We ended up sourcing a ton of vintage furniture.

HB: Where’d most of your budget go?

SE: We invested heavily in custom window treatments as well as wallpaper and light fixtures. We love furnishing homes. Mask a drab fridge with peel-and-stick wallpaper panels, as designer Anothy Dunning did with L’Amour by Tempaper in his own New York apartment. “The key to making removable wallpaper work is to find one that doesn’t look too shiny,” says Dunning.

To revive an outdated kitchen in a Nantucket cottage by designer Kevin Isbell, the floor was painted in a blue-and-white checkered pattern. Café curtails and fabric secure inside of glass cabinetry complement the fresh update.

If you have open shelving, treat the design element like it’s a gallery wall. Layer each level with beautiful ceramics, framed art, baskets, and vintage trinkets. In this kitchen by Kathryn M. Ireland, the designer also nixed cabinet doors in favor of playful fabric covers.

To amplify the character in a San Francisco kitchen, designer Lynn Kloythanomsup chose a classic red brick look. “It’s like a thin brick tile,” she explains. You can barely tell the difference, and it looks more realistic than peel-and-stick wallpaper with a brick pattern on it.

Instead of sticking with a solid slab backsplash behind your range, consider creating columns of shelving on each end. In a home by Laura McCroskey, the designer stocked shelving with spices, oils, small bowls, and a favorite cookbook for a functional and decorative display.

Materials: Humidity isn’t friendly to all surfaces and will absolutely wreck some of the materials you store in there over time. Plastic and glass? Easy to clean and affordable if mildew starts creeping in. Wood and non-rust-proof metals? Not so bueno for all of that steamy moisture. 

Wall space: If you can tinker with your bathroom walls, go for some wall shelving instead of one of those over-the-toilet racks that stores all of your toiletries right in the middle of the splash zone. Still renting and planning on getting that fat security deposit check back? Invest in some rolling storage or anything that nixes actual nails. 

Style: The divide between a space that screams “hello, I have a mortgage” and “dorm room bathroom” should be clear and distinct, but you can make it even more obvious with some tasteful, even affordable organizers that’ll store your stuff without looking like your mom drop-shipped it from Bed Bath & Beyond with a care package. If you’re sharing a bathroom with someone with very different tastes, look for happy mediums in neutral colors and designs.
